Workforce Development: Sector skills council considers how to raise youth work status

1 min read

Lifelong Learning UK is examining the feasibility of introducing a licence to practise, enabling youth workers to join a professional body, or bringing in a registration system.

The sector will be asked to consult on the proposals in October, coinciding with a consultation on the revised National Occupational Standards for youth work (YPN, 16-22 August, p5).

The proposals will be informed by other professional models, such as the Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status scheme, which will launch for the post-16 education and training sector in September next year.

New and unqualified teachers will be required to register with the Institute for Learning, the professional body for their sector, and expected to achieve QTLS status within five years. Existing staff will be able to gain the status through recognition of their qualifications and experience.
