The original proposals were felt by many to lack understanding of the unique role of youth work, and the importance of core principles such as voluntary engagement (YPN, 4-11 April, p2).
The revised standards place a much greater emphasis on these elements, and draw significantly on the standards developed by national training organisation Paulo in 2002.
The standards were due to be published in June, but are now expected to be signed off in September following consultation with interested parties. A series of consultation events with invited organisations are taking place across the UK.
The standards will influence the development of youth work qualifications, and are likely to lead to further discussions on ideas such as the creation of a licence to practice.
