New youth work standards published

1 min read Careers Youth Work
New occupational standards for youth work have been published after fears the old standards didn't appreciate the unique aspects of the job.

The new standards, developed by sector skills council Lifelong Learning UK, replace those published by The National Youth Agency in 2000 and stress the distinctive role of youth work. The revisions draw heavily on standards published by national training organisation Paulo in 2002.

Doug Nicholls, general secretary of the Community and Youth Workers' Union, welcomed the changes, which he said had largely responded to the sector's concerns.

"The main concern was the recognition of the image of youth workers, both in terms of the voluntary nature of the relationship between workers and young people and the educational nature of that relationship," he said. "These concerns have now been addressed."
