The Sunderland University Centre for Children, Young People and Families will help professionals respond to the integrated working requirements set out in Every Child Matters. It will provide courses, support work-based learning, conduct research and work with employers to develop employment routes within the sector.
Margaret Stephenson, associate dean for education in the university's School of Education and Lifelong Learning, said: "As a university, we see ourselves as an important player in the Every Child Matters agenda."
The initiative has been led and supported by Estelle Morris, chair of the Children's Workforce Development Council, who is also the university's pro-vice-chancellor.
