Working in the South East: Innovation centre

Five youth councillors have been elected to work with children's services staff at Hampshire County Council. Young people from across the county stood for election at the end of May, with votes cast by people aged between 11 and 25. Hampshire's executive member for children's services, Felicity Hindson, said staff would work with the young people on a range of issues.

Reading Borough Council is to take part in a recruitment event organisedby the Training Employment and Advice Shop. It will give participants aone-hour tour of its offices, a presentation, and details of jobopportunities. The council is also hosting a fun day for childminders,and is offering a start-up grant to new childminders.

The University of Southampton is working with the Children's WorkforceDevelopment Council to develop Early Years Professional training. Thecouncil is to publish a prospectus outlining the routes to professionalstatus, the financial support available and details about how othertraining providers can become involved in the next phase of training andassessment.

The Children's Information Centre in Bracknell Forest, Reading and WestBerkshire is running taster sessions to recruit childcarers. Sessionswill be attended by local providers, Job Centre Plus and furthereducation colleges. The centre is also calling for people to becomeregistered childminders.
