Wandsworth Council is to appoint an adviser to work with primary school children who may have difficulties in transferring to secondary school. The 130,000 two-year project is jointly funded by The Sutton Trust and the Department for Education and Skills and will focus on a group of around eight local schools. If successful, the scheme could be extended across the country with several more adviser posts created.

Lewisham Council is looking to recruit several volunteer mentors to workwith young people aged 16 to 21 for a year as part of the council'sleaving care team. In return for giving advice and support to careleavers, volunteers will be given training, supervision and support tolearn skills that they could use in the workplace.

A team of early years support teachers and speech and languagetherapists in Kingston have been accredited by I Can, a nationalchildren's communication charity. The staff work at an early yearscentre, set up in partnership with Kingston Primary Care Trust andKingston Council.

I Can runs a workforce development programme that includes scheduledcourses and flexible work-based training.
