Walsall Council is embarking on an overseas recruitment drive to help fill social worker vacancies. In 2005, the council successfully recruited six social workers from South Africa, India and the US. This year, staff will be travelling to Atlanta in the US to interview potential recruits face-to-face. Those who do make the move to Walsall will be offered the possibility of staying in a family home when they arrive.

Birmingham City Council has launched a schools' redeployment partnershipscheme in a bid to retain experienced staff in schools. Staff working inschools that need to reduce staffing levels, and who may otherwise faceredundancy or retirement, will be seconded elsewhere. Costs of up to4,000 are paid to the receiving school, which can be used as aretention benefit or to cover training costs.

In conjunction with the Children's Workforce Development Council,Warwickshire County Council has developed a pilot programme to embedcommon induction standards across the county's children's services.Management staff who work with children have met to explore how they canmeet the standards and share best practice.
