The course will provide up to 180 hours training, including 60 hours of placement, starting from next April. The 10 places will be partly subsidised by Horwich Town Council, which is providing £3,600 towards the scheme. Youth Express, a partnership between Rivington and Blackrod High School and Bolton Youth Service, will oversee the training programme, which will be open to 16- to 19-year-olds who live in Horwich. They will be able to train for a NVQ Level 1: Certificate in an Introduction to Youth Work.
Stephen Rock, leader of the town council, said: "We hope this will produce more skilled volunteers and could lead to a future career."
