Workforce: Candidates rush to fill early years role

1 min read
People are flocking to apply for a new graduate-level role that is at the forefront of early years workforce reform.

But nursery managers at the National Day Nurseries Conference said theywere still confused about the new early years professional status.

Early years professionals will lead services and be responsible fordelivering the Early Years Foundation Stage, a new framework for earlylearning and care.

The Children's Workforce Development Council is creating the role, whichis equivalent to Qualified Teacher Status.

Chief executive Jane Haywood stressed that it would not mean bringing innew staff. "This is not about recruiting new people and parachuting theminto new settings. Staff can develop into the role," she said.

But she added that not even qualified teachers would be able to "juststep into the role". A council spokeswoman said there had already been alot of interest in the role. The first candidates will start workingtowards early years professional status in September.
