The Children's Workforce Development Council emphasised this was a vitalstep when it published the standards for early years professional statuslast week. It said the Government recognised this was an issue.
The new role is meant to be equivalent to qualified teacher status. Intime the council says early years professionals should be the onlypeople to lead delivery of the Early Years Foundation Stage, the newframework for early learning and care.
But the move has alarmed some teaching unions who questioned whetherearly years professionals, who can be from a variety of backgrounds andtake a number of training routes, would be better-placed to lead thefoundation stage than teachers.
