Early Years: Experience must count for new role

Standards for the new early years professional role must be flexible and take into account previous experience, campaigners warned last week.

The warning followed the launch of the draft standards that willunderpin training for the new role, which the Government said it wascommitted to developing in February (Children Now, 22-30 February).

The Government has set the early years sector a goal of having agraduate-level leader with early years professional status in everyfull-time daycare setting by 2015.

The consultation, launched last week by the Children's WorkforceDevelopment Council, sets out the skills and knowledge new workers willneed to attain early years professional status. The consultationfinishes at the end of May.

According to the draft standards, they will need to hold a degree inearly childhood studies or an equivalent appropriate qualification.Alternatively, they can demonstrate appropriate knowledge for therole.
