The Children's Workforce Development Council is due to publish aprospectus on how the new role will work this Friday (30 June).
Keith Brumfitt, the council's director of research and development, explained that early years professionals would not necessarily leadchildren's centres or settings. But they would lead "professionalpractice" across settings. People who achieve the graduate-level rolewill also be expected to raise quality and be a role model for otherstaff.
The first 600 early years professionals should be in place by January2007. Brumfitt said the council anticipated moving from 600 to "a fewthousand" students in the next phases.
The council is keen to have a range of different routes to complete thetraining so it is open to as many people as possible and will seek tomainstream it by working with a range of private, voluntary andindependent providers.
