What is Hackney like?

Vibrant and diverse - more than 100 languages are spoken in the borough. About 35 per cent of residents were born outside of the UK and 57 per cent belong to black and minority ethnic groups. Although it is an inner London borough, one-third of it is parks or open space and it is a host borough for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012.

Are there any particular challenges?

More than a quarter of the people living in Hackney are under 19-years-old. The borough has a history of social deprivation, with high unemployment, low average incomes and a mobile population. Outcomes for children and young people are improving from a historical low.
