Philippa Russell, former disability rights commissioner and disability policy adviser at the National Children's Bureau, has been chosen by Prime Minister Gordon Brown to chair a new standing commission on the needs of carers.

The Learning and Skills Council has appointed Mollie Temple as a member of the working together advisory group, which aims to strengthen relations between the council and voluntary and community groups. Temple is an expert in social enterprise and currently chairs the Board of Local Care Direct in Yorkshire.

Jenny Adair has been appointed assistant director at the Northern Ireland Childminding Association. Adair previously worked for the Northern Childcare Partnership and the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children.

Save the Children UK has announced Alan Parker will be its next chair of the board of trustees. Parker is the founder and chairman of Brunswick Group LLP, a corporate and financial communications firm. He replaces Nick MacAndrew who will retire at the end of the year.
