Work Wise: Jargon buster - Neet

Have you sat through an entire meeting and wondered what your colleagues are rambling on about? Use our handy jargon guide to find out what they mean.

Where you might hear it: From a Connexions or youth work professional.

What does it mean: Neet is an acronym used to describe young people who are not in education, employment or training. A young person is classified as Neet if they have left compulsory education and chosen not to pursue either further education or employment. It is the job of Connexions staff to re-engage 16- to 18-year-olds who are Neet, and they have targets to meet based on how many young people they can get into further study or work. Although any young person can be Neet, there are usually high numbers classified as such in disadvantaged areas.
