Work Wise: Four Nations - Library services

Public libraries are now offering a range of services to encourage people of all ages to read. Helen Gilbert takes a look at the initiatives across the nations that aim to encourage children and young people to pick up a book.

ENGLAND

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport oversees the library servicebut it is both funded and provided by 149 local authorities. Last week,the department kicked off the National Year of Reading initiative andmost libraries run a "summer reading" challenge, which rewards childrenand young people for reading six books. Last year, 600,000 children tookpart. Generally, the older you get the more books you can borrow andchildren and young people are usually fined less or are sometimes exemptfor late returns. The Museums, Libraries and Archives Council chairs ayouth libraries board and will shortly be running a seminar to promotewhat libraries can offer young people.
