The number of 16- and 17-year-olds placed in bed and breakfast accommodation in England has dropped by a third in the past year. Sarah Cooper examines the policies on housing young people across the UK.

ENGLAND

In November 2006 the government announced measures to tackle youth homelessness. They included a commitment to end the use of bed and breakfasts when providing accommodation for 16- and 17-year-olds and to improve access to homelessness mediation across the country. It also aimed to establish supported lodgings schemes to provide accommodation, advice and mediation services for young people who cannot remain in the family home. In launching the measures the Department for Communities and Local Government also launched a national youth homelessness scheme to be delivered through a range of voluntary and community sector agencies, led by Centrepoint and YMCA England.
