ENGLAND

The Department for Children, Schools and Families has officially launched its smart card scheme in nine of the areas that piloted the shelved youth opportunity card to help disadvantaged young people. The £14.5m project will fund positive activities in Bolton, Camden, Cambridgeshire, Durham, Lincolnshire, Liverpool, Nottingham, Sunderland and Tower Hamlets. The pilots are aimed at 20,000 young people in years nine to 12 who are eligible for free school meals or are in care. Each young person will receive up to £40 per month to spend on activities of their choice, such as trips to the theatre, sports, music, dance, drama and outdoor pursuits. The pilots will run until March 2009.
