Work Wise: Four Nations - Training for head teachers

The National College for School Leadership is considering merging its training for head teachers and children's centre managers (CYP Now, 7-13 May). Sarah Cooper examines how head teacher training works across the UK.

ENGLAND

Training for heads in England is undertaken by the National College for School Leadership.The National Professional Qualification for Headship is mandatory for teachers applying to become a head.

Newly qualified heads can do a number of courses to improve their skills, including the Early Headship Provision, which allows heads to focus on opportunities that will make a difference to effective leadership.

Experienced heads also have a number of course options, including Head for the Future, which provides them with an assessment of the impact of their work and helps them work on leadership skills for the future.

SCOTLAND

In Scotland, the Headteachers' Association of Scotland devises the training programme for heads.
