ENGLAND
The only mandatory qualification needed to become a teacher is Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). This means completing a programme of Initial Teacher Training (ITT), with graduates doing a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) or Graduate Teacher Programme.
Undergraduates can do a Bachelor of Education (BEd) and Bachelor of Arts/Science with QTS or the Registered Teacher Programme. To be accepted for ITT, the applicant must hold grade C or above in GCSE English and maths.
Trainee teachers must pass skills tests in numeracy, literacy and ICT. Newly qualified teachers also have to complete a probationary period of three employment terms.
SCOTLAND
In Scotland, teachers must have the Teaching Qualification. Almost all courses involve full-time education. Students study for a Professional Graduate Diploma of Education or, alternatively, they can do a four-year undergraduate BEd course.
