Children's development should become central to teacher training, argues trust

1 min read Education
Teacher training should be redesigned to focus less on core subjects and classroom management and more on child development, a report is set to propose.

The report, by CfBT Education Trust, suggests that teachers should not just be taught to work in schools, but also trained as wider children's services professionals.

It proposes that anyone seeking to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) should have to complete a new additional qualification, which could be called Qualified Professional Status for Children and Young People's Services.

Tony McAleavy, education director at CfBT, warned that teachers receive limited training in dealing with challenging and disaffected young people.

"There is a degree of amateurishness in the way that teachers are prepared to address young people's emotional needs," he said.

"Teacher training emphasises the delivery of subjects and classroom management rather than addressing the rounded development of young people."
