Library services

2 mins read Education
Public libraries are now offering a range of services to encourage people of all ages to read. Helen Gilbert takes a look at the initiatives across the nations that aim to encourage children and young people to pick up a book.

ENGLAND

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport oversees the library service but it is both funded and provided by 149 local authorities. Last week, the department kicked off the National Year of Reading initiative and most libraries run a "summer reading" challenge, which rewards children and young people for reading six books. Last year, 600,000 children took part. Generally, the older you get the more books you can borrow and children and young people are usually fined less or are sometimes exempt for late returns. The Museums, Libraries and Archives Council chairs a youth libraries board and will shortly be running a seminar to promote what libraries can offer young people.
