Mental health services in youth custody

With the youth custodial population close to an all-time high, Alison Bennett examines the provisions currently in place across the UK to help young people with mental health problems in young offender institutions.

ENGLAND

The Youth Justice Board (YJB) oversees the secure estate and works with the Department of Health (DH) on mental health services. Local child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) are responsible for the mental health of young people in custody. The document Promoting Mental Health for Children Held in Secure Settings: A Framework for Commissioning Services identifies their needs.

A consultation on health and social care services for the criminal justice system ended on 4 March. It was a joint initiative between the DH, YJB, Home Office, Ministry of Justice and Department for Children, Schools and Families. Results will be out later this year.
