Consultation of the week: What children and young people shouldexpect from the library service

With competition for public money increasing and the local government white paper calling for more of a customer focus, the library service is taking a hard look at itself.

As a result, the Museums, Libraries and Archives Partnership wants viewson how library services should develop. The consultation will contributeto creating a "core offer" detailing what children, young people, theirfamilies and communities are entitled to.

The six key proposals look at why we need libraries, their role, funding, and creating better partnerships with the public, private andvoluntary sectors.

The consultation will feed into an action plan due to be drawn up inJune and a campaign to promote public libraries as part of a bid totransform services.
