The Department of Health has asked the National Institute for Clinical Excellence to produce guidance on stop smoking services to replace existing guidance. The guidance will be aimed at those in the NHS, local authorities, voluntary groups and children's centres who have responsibility for smoking cessation.

The document recommends brief interventions, behavioural counselling, group behaviour therapy, self-help materials, telephone counselling andsome pharmaceutical aids. There are clear differences in smoking ratesamong social classes, according to the document, and some ethnicminority groups have high smoking rates.

England will become the last nation in the UK to introduce a ban onsmoking in public spaces on 1 July.
