Consultation of the Week: Draft public benefit guidance

Under the Charities Act 2006, all charities must have charitable purposes that are for the public benefit from early 2008. This "public benefit requirement" is relevant to new and existing charities.

The Charity Commission is seeking views on its draft guidance on theprinciples of public benefit and its approach to assessing the publicbenefit of charities. Charity trustees will be legally obliged to haveregard to the guidance.

The consultation is particularly looking for views on the ways in whichthe commission will promote awareness and understanding of the publicbenefit requirement, including the ways in which it will assess whethercharities meet the requirement.

The commission is due to publish the guidance in October of thisyear.
