This England-wide consultation has been launched by the Department forEducation and Skills in a bid to address inadequacies in the inductionof newly-qualified teachers (NQTs). According to the DfES the currentregulations need to be streamlined and made more flexible.
Among the proposals are plans to shorten induction periods in"exceptional circumstances" as well as removing the requirement for NQTsto complete their induction within five years of starting it.
In addition the consultation is proposing that heads of service areallowed to take the role of head teacher in the induction process, whereteachers are employed centrally by a local authority rather than oneschool.
