The Safeguarding Childrenin Education guidance was issued under Section 175 (the duty on localeducation authorities and governing bodies to safeguard and promote thewelfare of children) of the Education Act 2002 in November 2005. Inaddition, the Working Together to Safeguard Children guidance thatcovers the children's workforce, was revised in April 2006. These werefollowed by a consolidated piece of guidance called Dealing withAllegations of Abuse against Teachers and Other Education Staff, whichcame into force in January 2007.

In response, juniorschools minister Lord Adonis promised a review of the current guidance, which is now taking place.
