Work Wise: Crib Sheet - Update on abuse allegations againstteachers

1 min read
The government has launched a consultation to establish how allegations of abuse are handled.

Are they updating the guidance on how to handle allegations of abuseagainst teachers already? It does seem soon. The Safeguarding Childrenin Education guidance was issued under Section 175 (the duty on localeducation authorities and governing bodies to safeguard and promote thewelfare of children) of the Education Act 2002 in November 2005. Inaddition, the Working Together to Safeguard Children guidance thatcovers the children's workforce, was revised in April 2006. These werefollowed by a consolidated piece of guidance called Dealing withAllegations of Abuse against Teachers and Other Education Staff, whichcame into force in January 2007.

So why the consultation? During debates on the 2006 Education and SkillsAct, Conservative peer Baroness Buscombe pushed to strengthen what wasalready in place, arguing that the identities of those subject toallegations should be protected from the media. In response, juniorschools minister Lord Adonis promised a review of the current guidance, which is now taking place.
