A lack of confidence among teachers in their use of grammar and language may be hampering pupils' efforts to write expressively, according to research carried out by the University of Exeter on writing skills in secondary schools.
The number of pupils attending independent schools in Scotland rose last year after a decade of stablility. Latest Scottish government figures show 30,981 pupils attending private schools in 2007 - a rise of 462 on the previous year. Teaching numbers are also up by 62.
