Vox pop - Do nurseries trump grandparents at preparing for school?

2 mins read Early Years
Institute of Education research has found children cared for by grandparents are less ready for school than nursery attendees.

NO

Lynn Chesterman, chief executive, The Grandparents' Association

The report was very narrow, focusing on how well children can tick various boxes, but there was nothing about the emotional wellbeing of the children. In terms of the emotional support that a grandparent can give, I would argue that they are better than a nursery at preparing a child for school. Also, grandparents can be more flexible in the childcare they offer. With the recent bad weather, many parents struggled to get to nurseries in time. A grandparent is more flexible and would not insist a parent turns up before 6pm.
