A second turn at parenting

6 mins read Early Years
One in three families rely on grandparents to assist with childcare and this figure looks set to rise. Suzy Bashford looks at the support currently available to grandparents and asks whether it is sufficient to fulfil their childcare role

Carol Canty, 63, from Canvey Island, looks after her grandchildren Harrison and Amy all day from Monday to Friday. Like many grandparents, she wouldn't dream of charging their parents for childcare. "I know they appreciate me. They treat me on my birthday and anniversaries," she says.

A regular fixture in her diary is a group for grandparents and toddlers every Thursday. "I originally started going for the children, but now I'd miss it myself. I'm retired and I like the conversation and mixing with the other grandparents," says Canty.

Around 50 grandparents and toddlers regularly attend the group. Canty puts its success down to the fact "the kids love it" because there are lots of toys, an arts and crafts table and monthly birthday parties. "It's so friendly and well organised and the hall is clean too," she adds.
