Grandparents' rights to be strengthened

1 min read Early Years Social Care
The government has moved to strengthen the legal rights of grandparents who do not see their grandchildren and provide more support for grandparents providing full-time care.

The announcements were made in the government's green paper on families and relationships, Support for All, published today.

Local authorities will be set new standards by the government so grandparents caring for their grandchildren receive training, development and financial support in line with other foster carers. The paper also details plans to simplify the legal process by removing the requirement on grandparents to apply for the court's permission before making an application to contact their grandchildren. Grandparent will also receive improved information about the legal and other options available so they can maintain relationships with their grandchildren when parents separate.
