Grandparents should be paid for childcare, says report

1 min read Early Years
Grandparents should be paid by the government for providing childcare and allowed to request flexible working, according to a report published today.

National charity Grandparents Plus has produced the report, Rethinking Family Life: Exploring the Role of Grandparents and the Wider Family, on the back of a YouGov survey of more than 2,000 people.

The survey showed that four in 10 parents will rely more on grandparents for childcare in the current economic climate. Six out of 10 people agreed that grandparents should receive some payment or reward from the government for childcare provision.

In addition to tax credits for grandparents, the report also suggests those in work should be given two weeks "granny leave" for newborn grandchildren. More than half of the people surveyed (55 per cent) agreed that grandparents of children under six should be able to request flexible working hours.
