More than 60 per cent of childcare in this country is provided by grandparents, and their efforts make a significant contribution to the economy. This care enables many parents to be economically active. Employers would benefit by allowing grandparents flexible working, not only in the source of skilled labour that they represent, but also in being able to use the skills of parents that they are denied if parents are unable to afford expensive professional childcare.

People expect too much these days. I know young couples have a lot to save for but if you want children you should bear in mind that you have to support them. You can't expect the Government to pay for everything and I don't think much of the latest idea to extend flexible working rights to grandparents. Of course, grandparents should help look after their grandchildren but it's up to them to negotiate how this works with their children.
