Grandparents visit Westminster to make a stand against welfare cuts

1 min read Early Years
More children may end up in care as welfare and spending cuts penalise thousands of grandparent carers, according to a report published today (28 October) by charity Grandparents Plus.

More than 200 grandparents and their grandchildren will travel to Westminster today to call upon parliamentarians for greater recognition of the estimated £12bn they save the economy each year.

The survey of 250 family and friends carers, entitled What If We Said No?, gives an insight into the challenges faced by the 200,000 family and friends carers who raise about 300,000 children in the UK, and how their situation is set to worsen.

The report found that almost 60 per cent of carers gave up work or reduced their hours to care for a child, and two-thirds have household incomes of less than £300 per week. Almost 90 per cent of the carers are under 65 and half are under 55.
