The Giving Up the Day Job report surveyed 263 kinship carers and found that 47 per cent of grandparent carers who responded had given up their careers to care for children, leaving many to struggle financially.
Poor financial support from councils and a lack of employment rights for kinship carers are particular concerns highlighted by Grandparents Plus.
Some respondents reported that social workers had pressured them to give up their jobs.
Just one in eight kinship carers managed to return to work following a period of kinship care and four out of ten were reliant on welfare benefits.
The report also revealed that 86 per cent of the grandparent carers surveyed are under 65 and 38 per cent are looking after children on their own.
