In Practice: Know how - Grandparents

2 mins read Early Years
Grandparents play a key role in looking after children.

In some families they may be the main carers so it is vital that they're not left out when it comes to children's centre and extended schools services. Often it's just a case of acknowledging and welcoming grandparents alongside other parents and carers but schools and centres can also offer more targeted support.

Don't stereotype grandparents. We're not just talking about older, retired folk but people of all ages who may work full-time. Being a Grandparent by Professor Bob Broad, published by The Grandparents' Association, offers an insight into the role of modern grandparents and who they are.

When you're running activities like play sessions or family learning then make it clear on posters and advertising that grandparents as well as parents and carers are invited. And don't leave out granddads. For some children a grandfather may be the only or main male role model in their life. If you're setting up a dads' group then make it a dads and granddads group.
