Voluntary Sector: London groups set to lose funds to local authorities

1 min read

Conservative members of the Association of London Government's Grants Committee have proposed cuts to the association's 27m voluntary sector grants scheme, which funds about 400 pan-London projects a year. The 9m would be reallocated to local authorities to fund groups in their area.

Association-funded projects include the Cardinal Hulme Centre's homelessness prevention scheme for 14- to 25-year-olds, and work by Barnardo's against sexual exploitation. Pan-London work for lesbian and gay young people may also be at risk.

The Voluntary Sector Forum said the cuts could lead to duplication of work among local authorities.

Samantha Goldberg, manager of Freestyle London, a pan-London group that supports lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth groups, said: "The repatriation of funds is a hollow promise." Freestyle London and six other LGBT groups will campaign against the cuts.
