The organisation has been partly mixed since 1976, but is keen to introduce the policy for its anniversary celebrations.
A letter was sent recently to county and area commissioners by John Asplin, chairman of the Committee of the Council at Scout HQ, stating that exceptions would include situations where there are specific cultural or religious requirements for single-sex provision. "Arrangements for deciding such exceptions will be developed and publicised over the next few months," he wrote.
Simon Carter, a spokesman for the Scout Association, said: "We need to look forward to the next 100 years and feel that a co-educational service will better meet the needs and aspirations of the next century."
