Gordon Brown, who said the Government would match private sector funds gained, hopes to expand the cadet scheme in state schools. Brown's initiative will focus not just on the military's Combined Cadet Forces, which has about 40,000 cadets in private schools, but also police cadets and ambulance cadets.
Brown said: "We want to involve young people in celebrating the contribution of our armed forces and would like to pilot an expansion of our cadet forces, especially in state schools. We also ask young people to play a leading role in Veterans' Day celebrations by volunteering to record memories for a veterans' archive, supported by the Government and lottery money."
