Guide units from deprived and socially excluded areas will be twinned with those from more affluent areas as part of a move to share resources such as uniforms and equipment and to increase levels of support for Guide leaders.
Rachel Swygart, project co-ordinator for adult support at Girlguiding UK, said: "The idea came out of a Making a Difference forum two years ago where Guide leaders in deprived areas said they needed more help running units." The forum highlighted a disparity in resources between units and certain areas with high levels of vandalism.
In the first phase of the initiative, Stepney, in east London, has been twinned with Sutton, in Surrey, while a unit in West Yorkshire has been paired with one in Sussex.
