Organisers had set a minimum age of 18 for volunteers but the plan was criticised by teenagers, including the Young Mayor of Newham, who urged them to rethink the ban.
Young Mayor Kaycee de Belen, 16, wrote to Lord Coe, who is overseeing the 2012 games, to say that the policy would deny thousands of teenagers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
The Young Mayor has now been invited to talks about potential volunteering opportunities for young people.
