Volunteers at the 2012 Olympic games

I'd give more young people the opportunity to volunteer.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) announced last week that there will be 70,000 volunteer positions up for grabs at the 2012 Games, but only 1,500 of these will be open to under-18s.

As the Young Mayor for the London Borough of Newham, which will play host to 60 per cent of the games, I know how much young people here have to offer. We're a diverse borough, so we've got lots of language skills, perfect for international visitors, and we know the area best.

Next week I am going to meet with LOCOG's head of human resources, director of communications and head of community relations. I will be asking them how they will ensure as many young people as possible share the once-in-a-lifetime experience of being part of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
