Olympic Games spark volunteering boom

The London 2012 Games has led to a surge in interest in volunteering among young people, according to research.

A report published today by the Legacy Trust UK found that 73 per cent of 16- to 25-year-olds who were directly involved in or inspired by the London 2012 games have given time to community projects since the events.

Of the 1,000 young people polled by the charity, which aims to create a lasting community, cultural and sporting legacy from the London games, 86 per cent of young people said they felt more willing to try new things as a result of volunteering at the games or simply watching them.

A total of 84 per cent thought the games made a positive difference to the UK and 78 per cent said they experienced growth in confidence.
