Young people face an Olympic-size challenge

1 min read Youth Work
This summer I spent two weeks watching the Olympic Games on TV. Inevitably, comparisons have been drawn between what took place in Beijing and what can be expected of London at the 2012 Olympics.

Beijing's closing ceremony illustrated the challenge facing Lord Coe and his team. While the Chinese fielded a highly choreographed cast of thousands, the UK's eight-minute performance featured the winner of a reality TV show, an ageing rock legend and a London bus.

However, of greater concern must be the stark contrast between events in London and other cities throughout the UK at the time our athletes were "medalling" in Beijing. Despite the magnificent success of Team GB, the images of this summer that will endure in my mind are of young people dying pointlessly on our streets at the hands of other young people.
