An Olympics 2012 themed volunteering initiative for young people involving 20 charities gets underway today (1 July).

Called My Games, the initiative is being run by volunteering organisation V and aims to create 10,000 Olympic-themed volunteering posts for young people.

Among those involved is HIV and sexual health charity Terrence Higgins Trust (THT), which has been awarded £180,000 by V to recruit 80 "sport champions". Those selected will run sport events for friends and young people in their community, as well as offer sexual health and relationships advice.

Marc Thompson, deputy head of health promotion for THT, said: "This is an opportunity for young people to make a real impact in their community."  He added that sports champions for the charity would be "a role model to the community" and get the chance to improve their CV.
