'Boring and geeky' volunteering rebranded to woo young people

1 min read Youth Work
England's youth volunteering service has launched a campaign called Favours because it says the term volunteering is seen as "boring and geeky" and off-putting by a quarter of young people.

V's campaign follows a survey of 16- to 25-year-olds that showed two-thirds thought the term volunteering was unappealing. But four out of five of the young people surveyed said they had done a favour for someone other than their family or friends. V hopes its Favours campaign will demonstrate that volunteering is as "easy and accessible" as doing someone a favour.

The campaign will consist of a series of opportunities for young people to do favours related to the interests that "resonate with them", which, according to V, are their peers, music, design, art, sport and fashion.

V's chief executive Terry Ryall said: "Two-thirds of young people are put off by the term volunteering, but they get the notion of doing favours for someone who is not a family member or a friend - we hope they make the link that volunteering is just as easy as doing a favour."
