Log on to ... Volunteering

3 mins read Youth Work
There are thousands of opportunities for young people to volunteer, but knowing where to look for the right kind of placements can be tricky. Tim Burke looks at the information available online to encourage youth volunteering.

An obvious place to start looking for youth volunteering opportunities is on V's website www.vinspired.com. The organisation was launched in 2006 after the Russell Commission recommended that more needed to be done to encourage young people to volunteer. Since then it has worked with around 500 charities to create 900,000 volunteering opportunities for 16- to 25-year-olds. The homepage features a series of films that can help young people identify the types of activities they would like to get involved with and create a profile that can help funnel opportunities towards them. There's plenty of case studies to learn from and detailed information on the kind of rewards available - from the satisfaction of running your own project to work experience for the CV and incentives such as free festival passes.
