Scams Awareness Month is taking place throughout the month of February.
The Office of Fair Trading has identified the most common scams targeted at UK consumers with the aim of alerting the public to the dubious schemes that try to part them from their money.
It has been estimated that UK consumers lose approximately 1bn a year to these types of schemes. Young people are particularly vulnerable as they are often the subject of exploitative marketing techniques.
The people who run these scams are clever and sophisticated and they know how to persuade us to part with our cash.
They will catch you unawares, contacting you by phone, email, post or in person, have slick professional leaflets and letters, be persuasive and persistent and rush you into making a decision.
