The National Youth Agency: Young people inspired by Act by Right

"Having designed the package we would deliver, we found that the exercises in Act By Right appeared to be far more participative and therefore we adapted them slightly to meet our needs," says personal and social development manager Les Simmons. "Over the duration of the residential, our initial thoughts were confirmed. The tasks in Act By Right proved very successful.

One example of this was using the 'Throw an Egg' challenge as our best team exercise."

Inspired by the exercises within Act By Right, the young people on the residential created radio jingles, acted out a scenario involving public transport, made a TV presentation, designed newsletters, posters and leaflets, and made a final presentation to a mock community group (all of the workers) to try to get funding for their ideas. "The high points were getting the opportunity to 'act out' various scenarios, team challenges and seeing how well the young people worked together through the structure of Act By Right," says Simmons. "The low points were that some activities proved a little laborious, though this was also down to the methods we used.
